"Pride is essentially competitive.....Once the element of competition has gone, pride has gone." I am a big C.S. Lewis fan. I have read almost all of his books and articles, many several times. He is my favorite writer. He writes like Michael Jordan played basketball, with great mastery. This quote represents one of the only thoughts I would tend to disagree with. It is from Mere Christianity, the chapter called The Great Sin, which takes on pride as the great sin. It is a troubling quote for anyone in sports, which are naturally competitive. If we take his thought at face value - pride is essentially competitive - it would seem we should conclude that Christians should not compete. After all, God is trying to remove pride and build humility into us as followers of Christ. How would you counter Lewis' thought? What rebuttal would you give to his point?
